Although the Grand Canyon became federally protected in 1893, it became a national park until 1919. uniqueness of the park derives its sheer size: 277 miles along the river, up to 18 miles wide and a mile deep. In fact, the Grand Canyon is so big that it has two main entry points, North and South Rims, which are 215 miles away to the other.

Fortunately, the Grand Canyon National Park South Rim has signed Amtrak service from the south-west of the capital. Literally there are alternative road, rail and bus. Here are five tips / suggestions to travel efficiently to and from the Grand Canyon on the ground:

A: If you want to take the train to the Canyon, you can board the Grand Canyon Railway. Once you disembark at Williams Junction, you can take the free shuttle to the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel e. Coming from the west, is five hours before the 09:30 departure for the dismissal Canyon. If you are returning to the west, the train leaves the Canyon at 3:30 pm and arrives at the Grand Canyon Hotel at 5:45 pm. This leaves you with about 3 hours and a half before the shuttle returns to Williams Junction Amtrak station.

Coming from the east, is not so convenient. As the Southwest Chief arrives late in the evening, you probably want to take the shuttle to Grand Canyon Hotel and overnight. The hotel is well furnished and similar to the original Santa Fe Railroad Hotel in Williams. After a good breakfast, get ready for the 09:30 departure described above. Back east, you may also want to rent a hotel room as the train leaves Williams Junction in the early morning.

Two: If you prefer to travel by bus to the canyon, there is convenient service from Flagstaff Amtrak station provided by Open Road Shuttle. Coming from the west, there is three hours before the break 08:00 departure for Canyon. If you are returning to the west, the bus leaves the Lodge Maswik at 6:15 pm and arrives at the Flagstaff Amtrak station at 8:00 pm, which is about an hour before the departure of head southwest.

Coming from the east, again, is less convenient. Upon arrival late in the evening in Flagstaff, you will probably want to book a hotel room before taking the 08:00 departure described above. Back east, you may also want to rent a hotel room in Flagstaff as the train leaves in the morning.

Three: You can book a rental car for maximum flexibility. Since Amtrak arrivals and departures in the area are not doing the normal business hours, you should rent from an airport structure, which has extended hours. Your best bet is to find such a facility by the Grand Canyon to Flagstaff Pulliam Airport. Check with the car rental agency to see if it can be picked up at the train station, or if you need to take a taxi to get there.

Four: If you really want to go to the North Rim and do not have a car, there is a bus service Transcanyon. The service leaves the South Rim at 1:30 pm and arrives at the North Rim 4 hours and a half later. The return bus leaves the North Rim at 7:00 am. Obviously, the service module runs only from mid May to mid-October, when the North Rim is open.

Five: The Southwest Chief is a train every reserved. If you are experiencing or bus service, Amtrak’s Superliner sleeping accommodations, you must make advanced reservations. Buy tickets in advance for both Amtrak and local transport services close to the Grand Canyon, you may be able to receive the discounted advance purchase or special rates for students and seniors.
