Ganges has its origins high in the Himalayas and its source is located near Gangotri Gaumukh. Small trinkets melt water of glaciers above combine to form small tributaries to Gangotri and fuse together to form the most sacred river in India. So why do people consider the Ganges a sacred river? Legend has it that the Ganges emerges from the hair of the famous Hindu god Shiva. People wanted to go up the Ganges on earth, but the river was so strong that if you spit on the ground that would bring chaos in the form of floods. Then Lord Shiva decided to let it flow from his coma in order to control the river flow. The other reason why people worship the Ganga is that it has become the lifeline of the people living along its banks where it flows. The water of the Ganges find many utilities and cities that are established on its banks are heavily dependent on the river for their economy.

Even if the Ganges is the most important river in India because of its usefulness is also the longest river over exploited. In fact, the Indian people believe we can attain salvation after death when his body was cremated on the banks of the Ganges. The best place to cremate the body is at the Ghats of Benares. In the city of Benares Ghats there are special (crematoria), where the person is allowed only official preparing the wood for the cremation. The body is then placed on short lengths of wood and then cremated. The ashes are collected and then placed in a metal pot and then poured into the Ganges flowing below.
