The Grand Canyon Skywalk
The Grand Canyon Skywalk, a massive glass walkway which perches almost a mile above the Colorado River, recently opened in Arizona. The unique horseshoe-shaped Glass Bridge is 70 meters from the edge of the Grand Canyon and offers a vertical view down from the edge of the canyon. Located 120 miles east of Las Vegas, Nevada, was built the Grand Canyon Skywalk Glass Bridge from the Hualapai Tribe to provide a one-of-a-kind experience that the Grand Canyon and make money from the tourists who flock to the will of this attraction. The inauguration was March 20, 2007, a week ahead of schedule. Many special guests, including Buzz Aldrin and Hualapai tribal elders took the first steps on the new structure.
And ‘the Skywalk safe?
More than three times higher than the Empire State Building, the glass bridge was built with more than one million pounds of steel and is built to withstand the weight of 71 fully loaded Boeing 747 airplanes (more than 71 million pounds) . The Skywalk was designed to withstand winds of over 100 miles per hour from eight directions.
Earthquake engineers also took into consideration when designing the Grand Canyon Skywalk. The structure was built to last through an earthquake of up to 8.0 on the Richter scale around 50 miles of the Grand Canyon.
Grand Canyon controversy
The opening of the Grand Canyon Skywalk has reignited the controversy surrounding the commercialism of the Grand Canyon, one of the greatest wonders of nature.
The main arguments against the new attractions are:
Some people believe that it is an eye-sore
Environmentalists believe that the Skywalk is turning one of the greatest natural wonders of the world tourist attraction in commercial
Others believe that the Skywalk devalues the cultural and historical values of the Grand Canyon and the Hualapai Tribe
Critics question how the tribe will support these locations and attractions with limited existing infrastructure (there is currently no sustainable water, sewage, garbage, telephone or electrical service in the area)
Supporters of the Grand Canyon Skywalk to say that the new attraction is simply a new way for tourists to experience the Grand Canyon like never before and efficient way for the tribe Huapalai to earn more on earth. They believe that the new Grand Canyon West development will be good for the local economy.
Grand Canyon West
The glass bridge is just a piece of a 6,000 square meters development called Grand Canyon West, which includes a visitors ‘center’, gift shop and a restaurant. It will cost you $ 25 to see the Grand Canyon from this unusual perspective.
The Tribe Huapalai is an administrator of the lands of the Grand Canyon. They intend to build hotels, shopping extra, and a golf course near the Bridge of Glass in the future. Part of their plan includes the addition of lifts to transport tourists from the edge of the canyon on the Colorado River (inside the Grand Canyon). pontoon boat rides, raft trips, and low-flying aircraft and helicopter rides also in their plans.

Grand Canyon Tours: West Rim VS South Rim
The hardest part of taking a tour of the Grand Canyon you decide to visit the South Rim or West Rim. Both are fantastic destinations. So to break this bond, I’m going to do a quick comparison-rim-rim, which will ensure that you are paired with the place that is best for you.
Want to work or landscape?
The West Rim excels in things to do. It ‘the only place where you can ride a helicopter 4,000 meters at the base. Then, if you are so inclined, you can walk to the mountain and the river raft the Colorado River.
The famous Grand Canyon Skywalk is here. This attraction is beautifully designed glass bridge that allows you to walk 70 feet beyond the edge as you suspend 4,000 feet above the River. Do not look down, if you’re prone to vertigo.
More exotic activities here include a helicopter ride to a working cattle ranch, horse riding ATV, Hummer off-road adventures, and horseback riding. One of my favorite things to do at the West Rim and Hoover Dam smooth-water rafting trip to Willow Beach.
The South Rim is tame compared to the West Rim. What is missing in “emotions” makes up for in natural beauty. This is the part of the National Park rangers who also refer to the canyon as “real.”
There are helicopter rides down on the South Rim. If you want to get to the base, you must walk. That said, the air tour here are superb. The helicopter ride from Tusayan goes straight to the heart of the Dragoon Corridor, the widest, deepest part of the Canyon as you travel by air cover looking South, East and West.
There is also the maximum of one day Grand Canyon rafting trip that runs from April to November. Options include taking a bus or plane to Page, Arizona, and then transfer to a raft on river. This trip is a smooth-water so there are no shortcuts. children aged four and up are welcome.
The South Rim trails are awesome. Bright Angel, South Kaibab, and the slopes are the most popular Top Rim. For the lookouts, go to Mather Point, Yaki Point and Hopi Point. Most tours include guided tours to these places.
Where is your starting point?
The West Rim is only 120 miles from Las Vegas. Helicopters, planes and buses can make the trip in 45 minutes, 25 minutes and 2.5 hours, respectively. The South Rim is too far away to Las Vegas helicopters. Your options are just a plane or bus.
I recommend you take the 45-minute flight from Las Vegas to South Rim. It ‘s fast, comfortable, and one of the best deals on the market. The bus is incredibly cheap, but one-way drive time is 5.5 hours and the total time of the tour is a whopping 15 hours.
Phoenix and Sedona travelers can drive to the South Rim in 4 hours and 2 hours, respectively. There are bus, plane, helicopter trips and local ones, but it is cheaper to drive yourself and do an air tour from Grand Canyon Airport in Tusayan.
How long do you have?
West Rim tours from Las Vegas are perfect day trips. The longest tour is a full day. Air tours are only about four hours, including hotel pick up and drop off. The earth Canyon South Rim bus takes at least 15 hours, which is why I cheerlead for the air tour, because there are again on the Strip at night time for your reservations. Day that originate in Northern Arizona are full-day excursions. I often tell people to try to book a room inside the park and overnight. This is easier said than done because the park system are usually reserved a year in advance.
What is your budget?
South Rim and West Rim tour buses are the cheapest and include a lot of add-ons such as whitewater rafting, Skywalk tickets and helicopter rides. air tours are more expensive, but also see the canyon more in less time. I estimate that what is seen on a helicopter tour of 30 minutes is equal to a couple of days on the ground. Over the aerial views are incredible.
Wrap
Tour of the Grand Canyon is full of adventure and beauty. The two main locations are the West Rim and South Rim. The dilemma is trying to visit. If you are departing from Las Vegas, the West Rim is the closest option. However, if your heart is on the South Rim, take the flight of 45 minutes. I recommend to the South Rim for travelers departing from Phoenix and Sedona. The key to doing everything in order to get the trip of your dreams is also pre-and on the Internet. Follow this system and you’ll get your Grand Canyon tour for a song.
